All’s quiet on the Panther front ‘til March 9 (weather permitting)

There’s a break in the sports action at Jefferson High. The Panther basketball teams failed to qualify for the Southern Divisional basketball tournament taking place this week in Billings – so, all’s quiet until March 9, when spring practices start up.

That’s assuming the weather holds, of course. Last spring, schools across Montana struggled to get heavy snow and ice cleared from tennis courts and tracks. This year – so far – it’s been a different story, and much of the snow we have had has been receding with the unusually warm weather. Really not a normal winter for this part of Montana, but we will take it.

Schedules are still being worked out and should be finalized shortly. As of now, the girls’ tennis squad will see its first action on March 24 when it hosts Fairfield. The first track meet is currently scheduled for April 7 in Laurel, but hopefully the Panthers will get into an earlier meet.

And Jefferson is set to host the first golf meet on April 2 – again, pending weather. The last two years, this meet was canceled due to snow on the course; hopefully, this spring it will be a go.

Meantime, the Southern B basketball tournament starts up Thursday at the Metra in Billings. The State class B boys and girls basketball tournaments are in Butte March 12-14 — a great venue for great basketball, and it does not get any closer.

The Ballin’ in Big Rock basketball tournament, which raises money for community organizations such as the Heritage Center, boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, the Carousel, and the Spay and Neuter Clinic, will take place April 3-6 at Jefferson High. Many past JHS players come back to play in this fun event.
