It was a relatively light week for Jefferson High’s wrestlers as they prepared for the post-season: The Panthers dropped a dual meet to Anaconda, then rolled to a big win in their home finale against Fairfield.
Tuesday’s contest at Anaconda’s “Snake Pit” was a rematch of a dual in the second round of last weekend’s state dual tournament. The Panthers won that one, and the Copperheads were still feeling the sting: They flexed their muscles and came away with a 46-30 victory. Korbin Rintamaki, Mason Mikesell, Mike Richard, Dylan Stevens, Brady Armstrong, Emma Jurkovac and Maysa LaFromboise were winners for Jefferson.
On Thursday, Jthe Lady Panthers traveled to Cascade to compete in an all-girls mixer. Jurkovac and LaFromboise won both their matches, while Megan Anderson split.
Jefferson hosted Fairfield on Friday. This was Senior Night, as the Panthers paid tribute to Armstrong, Stevens and Kolbe Michaud. This time, the Panthers got on a roll, and cruised to a lopsided 54-21 victory. Armstrong and Stevens won their farewell matches, and Mason Mikesell, Owen Mikesell, Cooper Mikesell, Richard, Blake Nordlinder, Chrystyan Hogue, Cole Christoferson, Brayden Tarr and Jurkovac also scored points.
Coach’s comments: It was a nice break taking the weekend off. January is a very tough month both physically and mentally, but the Panthers took it in stride and are excited for the post season. We have been competing with a wrestler or two out of the lineup all season but have overcome these obstacles and still managed to accomplish great things.
Emma Jurkovac and Maysa LaFromboise were selected as the Panther co-wrestlers of the week. Both dominated their opponents with perfect 4-0 records on the week, and each had three pins. Brady Armstrong had the quick pin of the week, dispatching his Fairfield opponent in 31 seconds.
The Panthers travel to Butte Feb. 7 and 8 for the Western B/C Divisional Tournament. Wrestlers will need to place at divisionals to qualify for the state tournament held at the Metra in Billings Feb. 13-15. Athletes who place also earn All-Conference designation.
