4-H fair adds new excitement

There were plenty of folks scurrying around, taking advantage of all that the Jefferson County Fair & Rodeo had to offer August 23-27. But it might be tough to find any that were busier than the members of the Boulder Outlaws 4-H Club. They seemed to be everywhere.

Kicking off the fair with their beef show on Wednesday evening, they added hog shows and sheep shows on Thursday.

Friday brought poultry, rabbit and pocket pet shows. And then, of course, there were the exhibits of all sorts of handiwork, from foods, to leatherwork, to photography and much more.

Saturday was the really big day as the 4-Hers got busy early with their livestock auction. Gradee Hauptman’s champion “Beef” brought a bid of $3200 from Matt Conroy. Aliza Hays saw the bids for her champion market lamb rise to $850, paid by Eagle Ambulance. And, perhaps as proof that everyone loves bacon, Hayden Hauptman’s market hog pulled in $3500 from the First Boulder Valley Bank.

The day was far from over, though, for the hard-working Outlaws. After removing their spiffy black pants, black ties and white shirts, they donned orange t-shirts for their ride on their parade float. Then it was time to head back to serve up a great barbecued dinner. And they did it all with big smiles.
